The Journal of Women’s History follows the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition.
Each article, book review essay or letter to the editor must be double-spaced throughout, including quoted material.
Each article, book review essay or letter to the editor should be submitted as word documents (.doc or .docx) and not as PDF files.
Article submissions should not exceed 10,000 words in length. This includes endnotes. An image or graph will count as 500 “words” each.
Do not include images in the manuscript file. Submit images as separate files.
All submissions should be in Times New Roman, 12 point font.
We ask authors to use endnotes to cite all references. Place endnotes at the end of a sentence, rather than mid-sentence. Endnotes should be double-spaced on pages following the article. Please use Arabic numerals. Please do not use footnotes.
Second and later references need only refer to the author or editor, short title of the work, and page numbers. Please do not use op. cit. or ibid.
Please remove all self-citations to ensure anonymity during the peer-review process.
The Journal of Women’s History uses American English spelling, following the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary, 10th edition.
All non-English words should be italicized on first usage and an English translation provided in parentheses. Thereafter, the non-English word need not be italicized.
